Vs 1

Woke up this morning

Felt the wind of middle age

Woke up this morning

Felt the cold wind of middle age

Still working hard on chapter one

But time has turned the page

Vs 2

What's happened to my waistline?

Well it's gone gone gone

No matter how I try

Can't seem to get my blue jeans on

Lines on my face

Deep as a canyon

Ch

Oh Oh

Forty  years old today

And its downhill

From United Nations Day

The clock wins

And it don't matter what you say

Oh Oh

Forty years old today

Vs 3

My oldest child just cursed me

And walked on out the door

My oldest son just cursed me to my face

And walked on out the door

You know I'd like to beat some sense in his head

But I'm not sure I could any more

Vs 4

You know that getting old

Has always been my deepest fear

You that getting old and fat

Has always been my secret fear

So when that worry hits me I just

Crack another beer

This song was written in honor of my brother John's 40th birthday, United Nations Day, October 24th, 1987. I think he found it puzzling because he is much calmer and more reasonable than the song's protagonist. I just thought it sounded pretty good.

Oh Oh

Forty  years old today

And its downhill

From United Nations Day

The clock wins

And it don't matter what you say

Oh Oh

Forty years old today

Out

Guess I'll fade

Fade away

Guess I'll just fade fade

Fade away

I wasn't ready to be

Forty years old today
